What Is Student Giving?

Student giving refers to the acts of students giving back to their community, peers, and university.

Student Giving Committee

The Student Giving Committee is a group of students under the advisement of the Annual Giving Coordinator with the goal of promoting a culture of philanthropy at ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ. Students in this organization are committed to educating their peers about the impact of student giving at ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ and encouraging them to join in the effort to support students in need and help ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ provide a high-quality education at an affordable cost.

If you are interested in joining the Student Giving Committee, please send an email to student-philanthropy@iup.edu

Impact of Student Giving

When students give at ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ, they’re directly supporting their peers by funding scholarships, campus programs, and resources that make a difference in everyday student life. Even small donations add up to create big opportunities, ensuring that classmates have access to the tools and support they need to succeed. By giving back, ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ students are building a stronger, more supportive community where everyone can thrive together.

One of the most notable student giving projects is the ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Food Pantry, which is still running today thanks to the donations of students and a few generous alumni.

Students can also make item donations to the ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Food Pantry and Help Center or drop off professional clothing at the Crimson Closet to help students directly!

Seniors! You may have heard about the Senior Class Gift initiative that encourages ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ seniors to make a gift before they graduate. Seniors who make a gift of $20.25 will receive crimson and gray philanthropy cords to wear for graduation.

Note: The Senior Class Gifts only apply to students graduating in December 2025 and May 2026. This program has changed for all other students.

ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Ambassadors

During ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ’s 2024 Month of Giving, the ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Ambassadors made a generous donation of $800 to the ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Food Pantry from their 2024 Homecoming float contest winnings!

In fall 2023, they won first-prize in the Homecoming float contest and began the tradition of donating their winnings to the ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Food Pantry and Help Center.

The ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Ambassadors works to represent the best of ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ by building relationships with prospective students, current students, alumni, and friends of ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ. One of their many goals is to make students aware of their roles and the importance of practicing philanthropy at ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ.

Colonel Stephen Abel ’73

Colonel Stephen Abel is a 1973 alumnus and a 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. He retired as a US Army colonel after a 27-year military career. Colonel Abel remains a loyal supporter of ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Veterans Program and the Military and Veterans Resource Center.

Col. Abel has always been an advocate for student giving. For more than five years, Col. Abel has provided a match for student giving to increase student participation in making gifts to ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ. This means that Col. Abel has generously agreed to match student gifts of $5 with $10!

Col. Abel believes that students can make a significant impact—even by making smaller gifts.
