What Are Safety Data Sheets, and Who Are They Intended For?
- A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a document created in accordance with the UN’s Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), which the manufacturer, importer, or distributor of a chemical product must supply to downstream users.
- The purpose of a Safety Data Sheet is to guarantee that all individuals who handle or are exposed to chemicals in the workplace possess the essential hazard information required for their safe use, handling, and storage.
- An SDS serves as a fundamental tool for hazard communication, providing detailed information on chemical and physical hazards, safe handling and disposal procedures, specifying required personal protective equipment, as well as emergency response techniques.
- Emergency responders, such as firefighters, hazardous material crews, emergency medical technicians, and emergency room personnel, may use safety data sheets for reference during spills, leaks, fires, or personal exposures.
