What Is This Class About?
SHP is now offering a three-credit honors course called Design, Build, Play (HONR 281). This course will meet an ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ Crimson Core requirement. This course will also count for three honors credits for students who eventually attend ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ and enroll in the Cook Honors College.
Summer Honors Program courses are designed to be dynamic, interactive explorations by the students and professor into the course topic.
This year’s course is split into two main areas of focus: games and storytelling (known as “ludonarratives”) in GAMEJAM with Prof. Mike Sell and creative engineering in our STEAMSHOP with Prof. Rick Adkins.
Mike Sell - GAMEJAM
What makes a good game? What are the principles of effective game design? More importantly, what are the principles of good game designing?
GAMEJAM introduces you to the fundamentals of game design and the principles of collaboration and cooperation that enable a team to put those fundamentals to effective use. During our time together, we will explore the different ways we might think about and experience play, game systems, and the design process. We will play games together, analyze how those games work, and how our experiences of play are shaped by design. And we will design games, both as individuals and teams.
By the end of our time together, you will not only have a better understanding of the relationship of games and play but be a better team player.

Unlock your inner innovator this summer! Dive into the world of creative engineering as you brainstorm, design, and prototype your very own invention to solve real-world challenges. You’ll utilize STEAMSHOP, ÃÜÌÒÊÓƵ’s state-of-the-art makerspace, while gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools and technologies needed to bring your ideas to life—including digital design software, 3D printing, rapid-prototyping tools, electronics, and programming.
